Program

This course aims to develop in the trainees a capacity to listen to, understand and respond in a therapeutic way to their patient's conscious and unconscious communications. It is very much a clinically based course with an emphasis on the discussion of cases.

This is an 18 month course comprising theoretical and clinical seminars and an Infant Observation.

The seminar program runs for 2.5 hours on a weekly basis and involves a theoretical seminar for 60 mins followed by a clinical seminar for 85 minutes with a 15 minute break in between.

The next course begins July 2016. Expressions of interest for this course are now invited.

The theoretical seminar program

The theoretical seminar program draws upon a broad range of classical and contemporary psychoanalytic theory and also relevant research in attachment theory and neuroscience. We encourage the trainees to deepen their understanding of the reading material, as well as to critically evaluate it.

The seminar program is divided into three modules.

Module 1: A Developmental Approach

Module 2: Psychodynamic Process and Technique in the Therapeutic Encounter.

Module 3: Clinical Application

The clinical seminar program

The clinical seminar program involves trainees presenting their work for discussion in a collegial and supportive atmosphere and is lead by the theoretical seminar leader.

The Infant Observation seminar

The infant observation seminar runs for 9 months simultaneously with the second half of the Theoretical and Clinical program.

It involves a fortnightly one hour observation of an infant on an individual basis. These observations are then discussed in the seminar which is held on a fortnightly basis. There is the option of continuing this seminar as a private arrangement at the end of the 9 months.

All trainees will be required to have a current Working With Children certificate to undertake this seminar.

Aims

It is hoped that participants will acquire a psychodynamic approach to their clinical practice with applicability to any branch of psychiatry. However the MAPP course also provides a basis for those wanting to do further training in psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Supervision

It is strongly recommended that the trainee be in supervision with a suitable supervisor.

Accreditation

This course has been accredited by the RANZCP Committee for Advanced Training in the Psychotherapies for the seminar and infant observation components of the Individual Dynamic Psychotherapy Program. The specific requirements for the Certificate of Advanced Training in the Psychotherapies are listed on the RANZCP website.

Fees

The fees for 2016/2017 are $2000 per semester for Fellows and $1800 per semester for registrars. This covers both the seminars and the infant observation group supervision. Fees are payable prior to the commencement of each of the three semesters.
